Programme Overview
When you study our Foundation in Creative Studies you will undertake modules exploring the design and production of large-scale, creative projects in order to successfully develop the analytical, creative and interpersonal skills needed to study an undergraduate Creative programme at university.
In addition, there will be a key focus on the enhancement of the English language and academic skills, as well as the German language.
Finally, students will undertake modules in research, critical and creative thinking and mathematics to ensure they have the general knowledge and skills suitable for studying at undergraduate level.
Please note that your Foundation studies will be at SRH University Heidelberg campus, and then your progression degree will be taught at the SRH University Berlin campus.

Modules
This module will help you to develop your academic, research and communication skills in preparation for your undergraduate degree. English language and academic skills cover reading, writing, speaking and listening and will give you an understanding of the culture, practices, norms and expectations of higher education. You will develop transferable skills such as effective communication to support ongoing study, career, and professional development. You will have both lectures and seminars where you will be asked to prepare and communicate with your peers each week to help you become more confident both inside and outside the classroom.
This module aims to enable you to participate in and practice independent learning tasks for deeper thought and investigation as needed for university study. You will learn how to effectively source check and participate in a range of discussions to encourage best practice research, presentation and debating skills. You will also be encouraged to invest in strategies that will deepen your understanding and interpretation of processes, motives, argument, rationale and credibility of information. This will help you to be more critical and precise in your academic arguments throughout your studies and working life.
Core Maths has been designed to ensure that you will have the necessary basic numeracy skills needed for your first year at university. Within this module, you will practice various mathematical manipulations and apply these concepts to real-life situations, to indicate the importance and applicability of mathematics to your future degrees. You will study a wide range of core mathematics including arithmetic skills, algebra, solving equations, probability and basic statistics. The module will help you consolidate existing knowledge and gain further confidence in working with numbers, including using the calculator.
This module will provide you with a foundation of the German language, enabling you to communicate effectively in everyday situations and on a variety of general topics. It will also give you an important introduction to the customs, culture and society and help you develop your awareness of the general social and cultural background of your study destination. Teaching methods are based on interactive language development tasks, such as group work and role playing. It will also include the study of texts, oral development work and listening comprehension exercises.
Ethics is a system of moral principles that affects your decisions, based on what you consider to be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. In this module, you will be encouraged to critically examine and discuss everyday questions and ethical problems. In doing so, you will be looking at a variety of applications to understand the interdependence and intersection between behaving ethically in fields such as technology, business and creative industries.
This module will enable you to understand the processes and decisions involved in creating and executing projects in the Creative Industries sector. Your research, communication and presentations skills will be further explored through report writing and conducting active research with regards to your chosen progression route e.g., graphic design, music design, digital arts, game design, photography, illustration, fine art etc.
Once you have completed your first semester of the German language and culture module, you will be able to continue practicing your German with your peers and with the guidance of a tutor the following semester. The emphasis of this module is on guided but informal conversation practice and a chance to continue to learn about key topics about living and studying in Germany.
Portfolio Requirements
Please be aware that in order to be accepted on this course a portfolio may be required with your application.
For BA Audio Design, BA Music Production and BA Popular Music, applicants should provide 2-3 audio files to showcase your talent in this field.
For BA Illustration applicants should provide a portfolio of at least 10 creative works or illustrations.
For BA Advertising & Brand Design applicants should provide a portfolio of 10 creative works. We encourage you to present your ideas, concepts, previous projects – whatever showcases what you can offer best!
For BA Film & Motion Design applicants should provide 2-3 of their own works from the cinematic field. This might include script, scenic sketches, storyboard or links to finished works on Vimeo or YouTube.
For BA Photography applicants should provide at least 10 creative works.
